Fromm vs Taste of the Wild Brand History Comparison

Fromm’s Story

Fromm has been in business for over a century.

The family-owned company dates back to 1904 and after successfully producing food for silver foxes and creating several vaccines for dogs, cats, and foxes, they start producing food for dogs.

Collaborating with experts and using innovative techniques, the Fromm company has made nutritional food for dogs since the 1940s.

They produce food in their facilities in the USA and their recipes offer complete meals without upsetting pets’ stomachs.

Fromm pet food company is proud of introducing mixed tocopherols as an effective natural preservative that is widely used in the pet food industry.

Taste of the Wild’s Story

This pet food manufacturer has been on the market since Diamond Pet Foods founded it in 2007, however, it is more popular than Fromm and its recipes are one of the top-selling.

Taste of the Wild also makes food in the USA and this family-owned company sticks to its primary goal to provide pets with high-quality food at a reasonable price.

Since its introduction, the brand’s popularity has increased due to the use of natural ingredients and formulas high in protein.

They tend to make recipes as close to dogs’ natural diet as possible, claiming that it’s in canines’ DNA to eat as their ancestors did.

As you can see both brands are known for making premium pet food and many pet parents are loyal customers.

Anyway, Fromm gets more points for experience and expertise in the pet food industry.

Another important feature is that when you buy Fromm’s food you can choose formulas for puppies, adults, and seniors, and you can select your pup’s size (small, medium, large) to find the best fit for your canine.

Furthermore, Fromm Four Star is their signature line and it features 25 kibble, canned food, and snacks with carefully chosen ingredients like meat, fish, cheese, veggies, and fruit.

The Four Star Game Bird Recipe is one of the most popular kibbles and it offers multiple protein sources from turkey, duck meal, turkey broth, turkey liver, and chicken meal for strong muscles and bones.

This brand has a smaller range of products, 16 dry recipes, 5 wet recipes, and no snacks or treats yet.

However, they feature recipes with premium protein sources like bison, venison, wild boar, Angus beef, fowl, lamb, and fish.

You can choose from three different brands, Prey Limited Ingredient, Taste of the Wild, and Taste of the Wild Ancient Grains.

Their formulas made with ancient grains provide additional protein and fiber and they give dogs a taste of nature.

Moreover, Taste of the Wild has 4 grain-inclusive and 17 grain-free recipes to make sure every pup gets a more appropriate diet suited to its needs.

Their limited-ingredient formulas are suitable for pups who need to avoid chicken, grains, or other allergens since they are made with only a few ingredients to promote stomach and skin health.

When choosing Taste of the Wild’s recipes you can find food for puppies, adults, pregnant or nursing, and senior dogs.

The recipes are for all breeds, though.

Their flagship formula, Taste of the Wild High Prairie with roasted bison and roasted venison is an excellent choice for adult dogs and dogs with food sensitivities.

It’s no wonder pups like the palatable kibble made with real meat, legumes, veggies, and fruits.

The formula provides complete nutrition for adult dogs and maintains their well-being.

So, no clear winner in this round.

Fromm is a better choice for picky eaters since it has more products high in meat protein, but Taste of the Wild can be the perfect fit for dogs who thrive on real meat, ancient grains, and a taste they crave.

Now, let’s take a glance at one of the most important things when talking about food- the ingredients and nutritional value.

Food Ingredients

Fromm starts its recipes with meats like poultry, beef, pork, rabbit, venison, also fish in combination with brown rice, whole oats, alfalfa, whole barley, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.

In addition, the formulas are enriched with fruits like apples, cranberries, pumpkin, and blueberries and veggies like carrots, watercress, pinto beans, and lettuce.

Fromm provides your furry friend with omega fatty acids from fish, chicken fat, fish oil, olive oil, flaxseed, and sunflower oil.

Similarly, Taste of the Wild’s formulas begin with buffalo, beef, poultry, wild boar, bison, venison, lamb, and fish together with brown rice, sorghum, millet, quinoa, cracked pearled barley, sweet potatoes, and potatoes.

The fruits and veggies included in the brand’s recipes are garbanzo beans, apples, raspberries, tomatoes, carrots, and blueberries.

This brand also provides omega fatty acids by adding ingredients like flaxseed, canola oil, chia seeds, fish, fish oil, and sunflower oil.

Both brands use high-quality ingredients like real meat, legumes, fruit, and veggies, to provide high-quality protein, fiber, and fat, and lots of vitamins and minerals for your pup to thrive.

Note that they don’t use by-products and grains like corn, wheat, or soy that cause allergies which makes them stand out among many other pet food manufacturers.

Meat Content

Fromm’s kibble features turkey, duck meal, turkey broth, chicken meal, goose, chicken, pheasant, quail, and duck while Taste of the Wild’s water buffalo, lamb meal, chicken meal, roasted bison, roasted venison, beef, and ocean fish meal.

Dogs are carnivores by nature and these two brands make sure to provide plenty of meat protein and delicious flavor our canines can’t resist.

Kudos to Fromm for including more different meats and giving dogs a unique taste by including duck, pheasant, goose, and quail.

And we have to give credit to Taste of the Wild for combining exceptional meats and adding ocean fish meal to give pups not only protein but omega fatty acids too.

It’s worth mentioning that neither brand uses by-products, they use real meat and meat meals rich in protein, minerals, amino acids, and nutrients.

It’s tough to weigh them up in this category, so we have a tie.

Nutritional Analysis

We will compare Taste of the Wild High Prairie for adult dogs vs Fromm Four Star Game Bird Recipe for all ages to show you the quality and amount of three important nutrients: protein, fiber, and fat.

Remember that your dog’s needs may vary and we suggest consulting a vet for the best advice on your dog’s unique diet plan.

Protein Content

This nutrient is essential for dogs and you need to make sure your pup gets the right amount and quality of protein in their diet.

The best sources of complete protein are meat, fish, poultry, and eggs.

Note that plant protein is not a complete protein and meat protein is better for dogs’ health.

Protein helps canines grow and maintain muscles, gives them the energy to stay active, and it’s vital for the production of antibodies and immune system cells that help protect dogs against diseases and infections.

Additionally, it supports the growth of gut bacteria and promotes healthy digestion. It also nurtures your pup’s skin and gives him a luscious coat.

Both Fromm and Taste of the Wild’s recipes meet AAFCO’s recommended 18% crude protein content for adult maintenance and all their meat ingredients are clearly stated.

On top of that, Fromm’s Game Bird Recipe has 29% crude protein content whereas Taste of the Wild High Prairie has 32%.

They both include egg product, but only Taste of the Wild has an ocean fish meal, which is rich in nutrients, amino acids, and omega fatty acids beneficial for your dog’s health, skin, and coat.

That’s why Taste of the Wild is the winner for offering slightly more protein and healthy omega fatty acids.

Winner: Taste of the Wild

Fiber Content

Fiber is beneficial for dogs and good sources of fiber are whole grains, veggies, and fruits.

To make sure your pup gets quality fiber you need to look for ingredients like brown rice, oats, sweet potatoes, flaxseed, alfalfa, peas, blueberries, pumpkin, and apples.

Food high in fiber promotes healthy digestion, good bowel movement, and oral health, and regulates blood sugar levels.

Moreover, fiber can help dogs feel fuller for longer periods, thus it promotes satiety and can help with weight management.

Another important thing is that an appropriate fiber intake has been linked to a reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even some types of cancer.

In comparison, Fromm’s kibble contains 6.5% crude fiber while Taste of the Wild’s a bit less – 4%.

Fromm’s recipe has great sources of fiber like chickpeas, peas, lentils, sweet potatoes, flaxseed, pumpkin, apples, carrots, cranberries, and broccoli.

Chickpeas are a terrific ingredient high in fiber that promotes digestion and lowers cholesterol.

Broccoli is not only rich in fiber, but in antioxidants, vitamins, calcium, and potassium too which promote healthy bones and improved immune function.

Taste of the Wild’s formula also features terrific fiber sources such as sweet potatoes, peas, and raspberries.

As you can see, Fromm provides more fiber and quality ingredients rich in nutrients and that’s why it wins this round.

Winner: Fromm

Fat Content

Fats are a concentrated source of energy that provides more than twice as much energy as carbs or proteins.

Dogs with high-energy demands need more energy and can benefit from a diet that’s higher in fat.

On the contrary, dogs who are rather passive or overweight need a diet lower in fat.

Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for dogs’ health and well-being.

Moreover, fats promote brain health and a lack of fat can lead to cognitive decline and neurological issues in dogs.

Including healthy fats in a dog’s diet can help to ensure that they are getting the necessary nutrients from their food.

And essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 play an important role in skin health, help reduce inflammation and keep the skin and coat radiant.

Good sources of omega fatty acids for dogs are fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna, also fish oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, flaxseed, chia seeds, etc.

Therefore, Fromm’s kibble has ingredients such as chicken fat, salmon oil, cheese, and flaxseed and the recipe contains 17% fat content.

Taste of the Wild’s recipe also has chicken fat, but instead of salmon oil and flaxseed it has ocean fish meal and the total amount of fat is 18%.

The fat content is similar, however, if your dog is lactose intolerant you may want to avoid recipes with cheese.

Nonetheless, both formulas offer good sources of fat that provide dogs with essential fatty acids that are beneficial for skin, coat, brain, and nutrient absorption.

Once again, the score is tied.

Flavor, texture, and palatability are important for our furry friends, especially if they are picky.

Some of our fur babies like dry food, some canned food, and many prefer a combination of both.

These two brands offer dry and wet options, and a selection of different meats and flavors to help dogs enjoy their food.

In addition, they both feature grain-free recipes for dogs with food sensitivities and you can find limited-ingredient formulas if your dog should avoid some common ingredients.

Fromm has a wider range of flavors and this is important for picky eaters, hence, this brand wins this round.

Winner: Fromm

Price Comparison

When thinking about dog food prices, you need to consider the following things: ingredients, nutritional value, added vitamins, and minerals, and overall quality.

Premium dog food costs more because the companies use high-quality ingredients, no fillers, or artificial preservatives, and they add vitamins and minerals to boost your canine’s health.

On average, Taste of the Wild’s recipes are cheaper than Fromm’s and more suitable for dog parents on a budget.

Nevertheless, the food is of great quality and it provides your dog with plenty of meat protein, fat, fiber, omega fatty acids, and nutrients necessary to stay strong and fit.

Fromm’s formulas offer excellent quality as well with several meat varieties for protein, fruits, and veggies stacked with nutrients and antioxidants to strengthen the immune system and keep your pal healthy and strong.

Taste of the Wild wins in this category for making more affordable dog food.

Customer Reviews

Based on Chewy and Amazon’s customer reviews we will compare Fromm vs Taste of the Wild’s top recipes.

Taste of the Wild High Prairie kibble for adult dogs has 4.5 stars based on about 4000 reviews.

That shows us how popular the food is, and frankly, we noticed many positive experiences.

Some dogs like their Taste of the Wild kibble even though they are fussy eaters and do well thanks to its great meat content, flavor, and health benefits.

But, some customers claim their dogs either didn’t eat it or got diarrhea and gasses.

Furthermore, Fromm got 4.4 stars based on only 40 ratings.

Customers were satisfied because their pups have shiny coats and the top-notch ingredients without any fillers proved beneficial for their dogs’ health.

However, some dog parents found the kibble to be too small and pricey.

That’s why we have a tie here as well.

Taste of the Wild’s recipe is far more rated than Fromm’s and you can read more customer reviews on their food.

Nonetheless, both brands offer good value for money and it’s up to you to choose the best option for your pooch.

Recalls and Product Safety

product recalls

The FDA controls the pet food market and if a product isn’t safe or doesn’t meet the standards, it can issue a recall or take other actions as necessary.

You should stay informed about current pet food recalls making sure your dog gets healthy, appropriate food.

Fromm has been recalled twice, while Taste of the Wild has only one recall.

However, Taste of the Wild has a lawsuit for the alleged presence of toxic materials.

Both Fromm and Taste of the Wild have had a relatively low number of recalls so far and they solved the problem quickly.

Also, they have rigorous quality control programs and regular tests to make sure pets get high-quality products.

In this category, Fromm wins for recalling products voluntarily and as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of pets.

Winner: Fromm

Overall Winner

Both brands offer great dog food made with premium meat, whole grains, veggies, and fruits and without by-products, corn, wheat, soy, or fillers.

The top-tier food can be pricey, but in our experience, it’s better to invest in your dog’s health because it will save you the trouble and vet bills in the long run.

We feel that Fromm has an edge over Taste of the Wild for its variety of flavors and long experience in the pet food industry.

But, Taste of the Wild’s recipes are usually higher in protein and more affordable.

After researching and testing both brands’ food it goes without saying that you get great value for money.

This article provides you with important information on these two brands, but check with your vet for the best advice on your dog’s diet.
